Toy-like tanks battling on a coffee table among glowing blocks

If you are one of the retro tank game fans who spent school breaks steering a little tank around a maze, firing shells that ricocheted off walls and praying the enemy didn't flank you, you already understand the appeal of Tank Avenger: Mixed Reality. It is not a remake of anything, and I will not pretend otherwise. But the core idea, a tabletop-scale tank duel with shots that bounce, will feel familiar, with a twist: the maze is your coffee table.

What carries over from the classics

The best old tank games were about geometry. A wall was not just cover, it was a billiard cushion. Tank Avenger's weapons keep that idea in play:

  • Normal Gun is the classic: a shot that rebounds off a wall one time.
  • Fast Gun trades power for tempo, firing quickly with two bounces per bullet.
  • Bomb Thrower fills the arena with explosives.
  • Heat Gun sends shots that home in on the player.
  • Big Gun delivers huge explosive rounds.
  • Triple Gun launches a spread of three bullets.

The Desert world is described as open sand with long sightlines and nowhere to hide from bouncing shells, and the Ice world as slick floors with sliding tanks and shots that keep going. Anyone who loved lining up a bank shot will recognise the thinking.

What is new

Everything about the presentation. Rather than staring at a flat screen, you look at the battlefield from above and around, because it sits on your real floor and furniture in mixed reality on a Meta Quest. Enemies roll across your floor, helicopters hover over your table and air strikes cut through your kitchen. You can lean in to spot a tank behind a block, or step back to see the whole arena.

The structure also goes beyond the single-arena formula you may remember:

  • 200 levels across four worlds: City, Desert, Jungle and Ice.
  • Four game modes: Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Juggernaut and Survival.
  • Upgrades: coins earned in battle upgrade each weapon individually.
  • Abilities: Shield, Speed Boost, Extra Life, Combat Drone, Portal and Air Strike.
  • A helicopter you can fly when things get serious.

The nostalgic pleasure of building mazes

Many of us remember the real hobby being level design: sketching arenas on graph paper. The Level Builder is a direct descendant. You can create custom levels around your real play space, placing blocks on the coffee table, walls along the sofa and spawn points by the door, then fight in the arena you designed. Your custom levels are saved locally on your headset.

How a veteran should approach it

  1. Re-learn the bounce. Your instincts about angles will help immediately, but you now judge them in 3D space, with depth.
  2. Pick the Fast Gun or Normal Gun early if you love ricochets, then use coins to upgrade. Consider the tracking Heat Gun when you want to experiment.
  3. Use the room. Walk around the arena. Physical movement is a new tool, not a chore.
  4. Respect the modern tricks. Fiber optic drones snake toward you on thin wires and must be cut, and a launched NUKE can be caught and thrown away. These are new threats the classics never had.

Setting up like an adult

Nostalgia does not excuse sloppy safety. Clear roughly 2 × 2 metres of floor, tidy cables, keep the room well lit, and complete your headset's room setup. Play in short sessions and stop if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable.

Is it for you?

If your fondness for tank games is about lining up clever ricochets and clearing a screen of enemies, you will find kindred spirits here, plus a lot more to chew on. If you want a pixel-perfect clone, look elsewhere. The Tank Avenger page shows screenshots, and the Meta Horizon Store listing has the current price.
