Stuck on a HAUNTED Chapter? A Five-Minute Debrief Method

Failed a nightmare in HAUNTED: Are You Alone? Use this short debrief to work out what went wrong and change just one thing before you try again.

Everyone gets stuck eventually. If you are stuck on a HAUNTED chapter, repeating the same attempt louder will not help. A short debrief will, and it takes about five minutes. This method uses nothing but your own memory and the facts the game gives you.

Step 1: Step away

Take the headset off, drink some water and let your pulse settle. Frustration and fear both cloud memory. Nothing is lost when you stop, and your progress is stored on your headset.

Step 2: Name the failure in one sentence

Be specific. "I panicked" is vague. "I forgot to shake the flashlight" or "I stared at the drills" or "I kept turning the wrong way" is useful. If you cannot name it, name the moment it started going wrong.

Step 3: Sort the cause

Most failures fall into four buckets:

  1. Tools: wrong weapon, weak upgrades, dead flashlight.
  2. Position: too near a wall, off-centre, tangled in a cable.
  3. Attention: not listening, not scanning, staring when you should look away.
  4. Nerves: freezing, rushing, over-gripping.

Pick one bucket as the main culprit.

Step 4: Change exactly one thing

Changing everything at once makes it impossible to learn what worked. Choose one adjustment:

  • If tools: visit the shop and upgrade the weapon you used most.
  • If position: re-centre at the start of each wave, and run Space Setup again if the layout changed.
  • If attention: adopt a scan pattern or "listen first" mantra.
  • If nerves: add a one-breath reset before the chapter starts.

Step 5: Check the physical setup

Odd failures can be caused by tracking. If monsters do not line up with your walls, make sure Space Setup includes your floor, walls and large furniture, then re-run it if the room changed and restart the game. If your hands are not detected, check that hand tracking is enabled and the room is well lit. Controllers are always an alternative.

Step 6: Retry with a mini-goal

Do not aim to "win". Aim to do one thing right: for instance, to shake the flashlight within a second, or to turn toward every sound. Small goals make the attempt feel winnable and give you progress even if the chapter still beats you.

Step 7: Know when to stop

If you have tried a few times and frustration is climbing, quit for the night. HAUNTED is intense: sudden loud sounds, flashing and darkened light, gore and jump scares. Tired players make more mistakes and enjoy less. Come back fresh.

Use the shop wisely

Upgrades are a legitimate tool. The page encourages them, and spending on the weapon you trust can ease a stubborn chapter. It is not cheating; it is the game's own answer to difficulty.

Remember why you are here

The fear is the point. A chapter that scares you into failing is a chapter working as designed. Treat each failure as information, and the nightmare gets a little less frightening each time. See the full list of nightmares on the HAUNTED page.

A sample debrief

Imagine you lost to the arms in the walls three times. Your sentence: "I kept swinging at the same wall while another cracked behind me." The bucket: attention. The one change: after every cut, glance at the other three walls. The mini-goal: check behind you after each swing. Notice how specific and small that is. It will not make the chapter easy, but it turns a vague sense of being overwhelmed into a skill you can practise, and that is usually all it takes to break a streak of failures.

One last tip

If you retry the same chapter several times in a row, change the environment too: a sip of water, a stretch, a fresh breath. Small resets keep your attempts from blurring together.

FAQ

What should I do if I keep failing a chapter in HAUNTED?

Are upgrades worth it if I'm stuck?

Yes. The page says you can upgrade every weapon in the shop between chapters.

Could tracking be the problem?

Possibly. Check Space Setup, lighting and hand tracking settings.

Can I skip a chapter?
