Friends gathered around a player in a VR headset, laughing and filming

Every friend group has the person who says "horror doesn't scare me." A scary VR game to dare friends with is the fastest way to test that claim, and HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is built for it. It runs on one Quest headset, so the dare is simple: put it on, stand in the middle of the room, and see how long you last.

Why it works as a dare

The nightmare does not happen in a haunted mansion. It happens in the room everyone is standing in. When the headset is on, the player sees the real room, then the wall cracks and enormous arms smash through. Spectators see only a friend ducking, swinging and yelling at nothing. It is funny in a way watching a screen never is.

Dares you can set up (no scoring system needed)

  • The Stand-Your-Ground: the player may not step backwards during a chapter.
  • The Staredown: in the drills chapter, deadly drills follow your eyes and strike if you are too slow to look away. Dare someone to look right at them.
  • The Leap of Faith: follow the puppy into the cave without commenting.
  • The Last Dance: dance with the cursed doll and keep going until it ends the dance.
  • Hand-Only Hero: play with bare hand tracking instead of controllers.
  • Tag Team: swap the headset after every chapter.

Keep the stakes silly: the loser makes tea, does the dishes, or buys the next round of snacks.

Safety for a chaotic room

A dare turns into an accident if you ignore the practical stuff.

  1. Clear the floor of bags, shoes, cables and drinks.
  2. Run the headset's Space Setup so the game knows your walls, floor and furniture.
  3. Keep spectators outside the swing zone, and out of the way of anyone ducking or turning.
  4. Make "headset off" an instant, respected rule. The game has sudden loud sounds, flashing and darkened light, gore and intense jump scares. Nobody should be forced.
  5. Do not dare anyone with epilepsy, a heart condition, anxiety disorders or pregnancy to play. The game is not suitable for them, and it is not suitable for children.

The weapons are part of the fun

Between chapters there is a shop for upgrading weapons: an axe and sword for slicing the arms that come through the walls, a flashlight that freezes crawling skulls (shake it back to life when it flickers out), and pistols, a shotgun and an AK-47 in the graveyard. A friend who panics and forgets the flashlight is a gift to the audience.

Make the dares last

There are two secret chapters hidden behind strange symbols, and if you try drawing a circle with a dot in the middle on the shop floor, something might happen. Turn it into a group puzzle: everyone suggests symbols, the player draws. Three additional game modes offer more ways to be scared once the story ends.

Filming it

The terms of service allow sharing screenshots and videos of your play, including streaming and reviews. Film the player and the room, and ask for consent from everyone in frame before posting.

You need a Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3S. Find the game on the Meta Horizon Store.

Rules for a fair dare

The best dares are the ones everyone agrees to in advance. Settle the stakes before anyone puts the headset on, decide whether quitting early counts as losing, and make sure the player can call a stop without being mocked. Keep it fun for the person in the headset and the people watching. If someone wants out, cheer for the attempt. A group that respects limits ends up daring each other again next week, which is the real goal of any dare night.

After the dare

When the headset comes off, give the player a minute and a drink, and resist the urge to mock. Collect the reactions, award the silly prizes and decide on the next challenge. If someone was clearly shaken, check in with them. A dare night works because everyone feels safe enough to be scared, and that trust is worth more than any single clip.

FAQ

Can my friends play together at once?

The game is played on one headset. Friends take turns while the rest watch.

What is the best dare for a first-timer?

Start small: finish one chapter without taking the headset off. Do not pressure anyone past their limit.

Is it okay to play after a few drinks?

Not a good idea. You swing and turn in a real room, so stay sober enough to stay inside your boundary.

Can I dare a younger sibling?

No. HAUNTED is not suitable for children.
