Mixed Reality vs AR: Why MR Makes Horror Feel Real

Mixed reality vs augmented reality explained in plain language, with examples from horror gaming on Meta Quest and what each means for your room.

The terms get tossed around so casually that many people use them as synonyms. Mixed reality vs augmented reality is a genuine distinction, though the lines blur, and the difference matters when you decide what to play.

Augmented reality: digital on top of the real

Augmented reality (AR) overlays digital content on a view of the real world, most commonly through a phone or tablet screen. You see your room through the camera, and a digital object appears on top. The object may sit on a table in the image, but the screen is a small window onto the scene.

Mixed reality: digital that knows the room

Mixed reality (MR) is usually used for experiences in which virtual objects interact with, or are anchored to, the physical environment. On a headset such as Meta Quest, passthrough cameras show you your surroundings, and the game uses an understanding of your room (floor, walls, furniture) to place content in it.

Definitions overlap and companies use the words differently. Think of it as a spectrum from "digital label on the world" to "digital objects that behave as if they belong in it."

Why it matters for horror

Horror is all about presence. A phone AR ghost is a fun novelty; a headset mixed reality ghost standing in your doorway surrounds your whole view. HAUNTED: Are You Alone? uses mixed reality on Meta Quest: arms break through your real walls and skulls crawl from your real floor, using the layout from your headset's Space Setup.

What mixed reality needs

  • A headset with passthrough. HAUNTED supports Quest 2, Pro, 3 and 3S, with the most convincing look on Quest 3 and 3S due to colour passthrough.
  • Space Setup completed.
  • A clear play area.

What phone AR needs

A phone or tablet with a camera and an app. No special room setup is usually required, though lighting and surfaces matter.

And what about VR?

Virtual reality (VR) replaces the real world completely. Mixed reality keeps it. You can think of it as three settings: VR (all virtual), MR (virtual blended into real), AR (digital laid over real).

Which is better for games?

It depends on what you want. Phone AR is accessible and quick. Headset MR is immersive and physical. For something like HAUNTED, immersion is the point.

Safety reminder

Because mixed reality keeps your real surroundings visible, it is tempting to assume it is risk-free. You still swing and turn quickly. Clear the area, stay inside your boundary and remove the headset if you feel unwell. HAUNTED is not suitable for children, people who are pregnant, or anyone with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders.

Where the terms came from

The vocabulary developed over decades in research and industry, and it still shifts. 'Augmented reality' was used early for overlays that add information to a view, such as heads-up displays. 'Mixed reality' emerged to describe a continuum between purely real and purely virtual environments, with experiences placed anywhere along it. Today, headset makers often use 'mixed reality' for passthrough experiences with room understanding, while 'AR' is common for phone-based or glasses-based overlays.

Because the words are marketing as well as science, do not worry if different sources use them differently. When shopping, focus on what the experience actually does: Does it show my room? Does it know where my walls are? Does it need a headset? Those answers matter more than the label.

FAQ

Is mixed reality the same as AR?

Not exactly. AR overlays digital content on the real world; MR typically implies deeper interaction between virtual objects and your actual space.

Is Meta Quest a mixed reality device?

Quest headsets with passthrough support mixed reality games such as HAUNTED.

Do I need to scan my room?

Run Space Setup so the game knows your floor, walls and furniture.

Where can I try a mixed reality horror game?

To see mixed reality in action rather than in theory, the game is listed on the Meta Horizon Store.
