A glowing fist swinging toward a small winged monster in the air above a fantasy valley

One of the nicest surprises in Sozo Tower Defense is that you are not only the person placing towers. The game lets you shoot the flyers yourself and punch them out of the sky. If you want to punch flying enemies in VR and actually enjoy it rather than flail, this guide covers the practical side.

Why you need to do it

Flying enemies skip the path entirely, the game says. Your Cannon, Flamethrower and Frost Spire are built around ground paths, so they may never touch a flyer. The Missile Battery is the dedicated answer, but even then flyers can leak, especially when they arrive as dozens of weak flyers at once. Your fists are the emergency layer.

Before you start: space

Punching means moving your arms. In both VR and mixed reality the game says to keep a little space around you, because you will reach, aim and punch.

  1. Clear the area of cables, furniture edges and fragile objects.
  2. Set your boundary properly and keep your headset's boundary features on.
  3. Play in a well-lit room, especially if you use hand tracking.
  4. Check for people and pets before a big wave.

If you feel dizzy or unwell, stop and take a break.

Stance

  • Stand with your feet about shoulder width and a slight bend in the knees; you will lean more than you think.
  • Keep your elbows relaxed. Short, controlled punches are easier to aim than huge swings.
  • Stay near the Core Crystal's side of the action so that leaks reach you rather than passing you by.

Hand tracking or controllers

Sozo supports Touch controllers and hand tracking, and can switch automatically. A few points:

  • Controllers give you a consistent, tactile hold, handy for long sessions.
  • Hand tracking feels natural for punching, but depends on good light and clear detection. If your hands aren't detected, check that hand tracking is enabled in your headset settings and that the room is well lit.

Try both on a calm level and see which one feels more reliable for you.

Reading flyers

Watch the approach. Flyers head toward the crystal, so they come to you. Instead of chasing, position yourself where they converge and let them come into reach. Weak flyers in swarms are the best punching targets: fast and numerous, but not tough.

When to punch, when to build

Punching is great for leaks and for weak flyers. It isn't a substitute for a defense:

  • If flyers keep getting through, add or upgrade a Missile Battery. See the anti-air guide.
  • If you're too busy punching to manage the rest, simplify: place towers first, then step in.
  • If the ground wave is the problem, don't spend your attention on air.

Combine with powers

  • Stasis freezes the battlefield for a moment, giving you a clean window.
  • Meteor hits the thickest part of a wave and can clear a swarm if it's bunched.
  • Overcharge pushes your towers past their limits so you need to punch less.

Mixed reality notes

In mixed reality, monsters march across your real floor and portals open in your real walls. Be aware of your real surroundings first; the game places virtual objects in your space, and you're responsible for your own safety and that of people and pets around you.

Warm up

A few arm circles before a session help. Take regular breaks. Short sessions are better than a marathon.
