Active VR Horror: Swing, Duck and Sweat Through HAUNTED

Prefer VR games that make you move? HAUNTED is an active horror game on Meta Quest where you swing, duck and spin. Space, warm-up and safety tips.

Some people play VR sitting down. Others want to move until their shirt sticks to their back. If you are in the second group, an active VR horror game adds adrenaline to the workout without making it feel like exercise. HAUNTED: Are You Alone? does ask you to move, and here is how to do it comfortably.

How much movement does it actually need?

The game's requirements say: you will swing, duck and turn around in a hurry. The terms say it makes you swing, duck and turn suddenly. That is the extent of what the developer states; I cannot give you calorie counts, and HAUNTED is a horror game, not a fitness programme. Treat any exertion as a side effect.

The moves

  • Swinging an axe or sword at arms bursting through your walls.
  • Ducking and turning when something appears behind you.
  • Aiming pistols, a shotgun or an AK-47 at the graveyard.
  • Shaking the flashlight back to life when it flickers out.
  • Looking away fast from the drills that follow your eyes.
  • Drawing symbols on the shop floor.

Warm-up and cool-down (general, cautious advice)

You don't need a routine, but basic care helps:

  1. Roll your shoulders and neck, and loosen your wrists before a swinging game.
  2. Start with a gentle chapter before going all-out.
  3. Keep water nearby.
  4. Take breaks between chapters; the shop is a natural pause.
  5. Stretch afterwards if you feel tight.

If you have joint, back or heart concerns, talk to a doctor. The game itself is not suitable for people with heart conditions.

Space matters most

Active play needs a proper area.

  • Run Space Setup so the game knows your walls, floor and furniture.
  • Move anything fragile out of reach.
  • Keep cables off the floor.
  • Mind the ceiling: lamps and fans love to meet an overhead swing.
  • Keep people and pets away from the zone.
  • Stay inside your boundary.

Controllers or hands

The game supports Touch controllers and hand tracking. For energetic swinging, controllers give a firm grip; hands feel freer. Wrist straps on controllers are a common safety habit, and good lighting helps hand tracking.

Keep it sustainable

Fear and exertion together can be tiring. Short sessions work best, and the game's own advice for anyone who finds it too much is to play in short sessions. Take the headset off whenever you feel unwell. Nothing is lost.

Content warning

Exercise and fright combine here, so know the warning: sudden loud sounds, flashing and darkened light, gore and intense jump scares. People who are pregnant, children, and anyone with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders should leave it alone.

Where to get it

Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S. The Meta Horizon Store has the listing.

Listen to your body

Active VR is fun until it is not. If you feel pain, dizziness or unusual fatigue, stop. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can stand in, keep the room cool and take a break at least between chapters. If you have a health condition that affects exercise, check with a professional before playing anything physical. The game itself is not suitable for people with heart conditions, and a good night is one that ends with you feeling pleasantly worn out, not unwell.

Planning a session

Pick a time when you are rested and not hungry, and tell the people you live with what you are about to do, since shouting and sudden movement are part of the deal. Do a quick look around the room for anything new since your last session: a bag, a chair, a pet. Start with the controllers if you are still learning the swing, and move to bare hands once you are comfortable. Finish with water and a stretch. A little preparation turns a risky flail into a satisfying, energetic evening.
