Most articles try to talk you into buying. This one will happily talk you out of it. If you are asking is VR horror safe for me, the answer depends on you, and HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is intense enough that the developer lists clear groups who should not play. Here is a straight guide.

The official content warning

The developer lists:

  • Sudden loud sounds
  • Flashing and darkened light
  • Gore
  • Intense jump scares

And says the game is not suitable for children, for people who are pregnant, or for anyone with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders. The terms add: if you have ever had a seizure, loss of awareness or other symptom linked to an epileptic condition, consult a doctor before playing.

I am not a doctor, and this is not medical advice. If any of those apply to you, or you are unsure, skip the game or talk to a doctor.

Who should skip it

  • Children. Full stop.
  • Anyone pregnant.
  • Anyone with epilepsy or a history of seizures.
  • Anyone with a heart condition.
  • Anyone with an anxiety disorder.
  • Anyone who gets motion-sick or panicky in VR and doesn't want to risk it.
  • Anyone without a clear play area. You will swing, duck and turn.
  • Anyone who dislikes gore or being startled.

Who it is built for

Adults who enjoy horror and already own a Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3S, and who want the nightmare to happen in their own room. If you like intense jump scares and fighting back with an axe, sword, flashlight and guns, you are in the target group.

If you are on the fence

Some honest ways to test your comfort without buying:

  1. Watch footage first. See the pacing and the loudness.
  2. Watch a friend play and gauge your own reaction.
  3. Check the store page for details and age rating.
  4. Start with a plan: short sessions, the lights on in the real world, a friend nearby.

If you buy and it is too much, the developer's advice is simple: take the headset off. You can always do that, and nothing is lost. Refunds go through the Meta Horizon Store under Meta's policy.

Physical safety in the room

The game places virtual things in your real surroundings. Clear obstacles, cables and fragile objects, complete room setup, keep boundary features enabled, and stay away from walls, furniture, people and pets. Virtual walls breaking does not mean you can walk through real ones. Stop immediately if you feel dizziness, nausea, panic, pain or discomfort.

Privacy is not a reason to skip

For the privacy-minded: the policy says the game collects no personal data, sends nothing to the developer's servers and does not use the microphone.

Respecting your own limits

There is no shame in skipping a game that is not right for you. Plenty of people enjoy horror films but know they do not enjoy being inside the scene, and that is a reasonable preference. If you are unsure, ask yourself whether the idea sounds exciting or dreadful. Excitement is a good sign; dread without any thrill is a reason to wait. Whatever you decide, there are plenty of other things to play, and the game will still be there if you change your mind.

If a friend wants you to try it

Social pressure is a poor reason to play a game that worries you. It is fine to say no, to watch instead, or to choose another activity. A good friend will understand. If you do decide to try it, tell them your limits first, agree on a stop word and keep the session short. And if the answer is still no, offer to be the spotter or the camera operator, which is arguably the best seat in the house anyway.
