Couple on a sofa at home, one wearing a VR headset and recoiling while the other laughs

Dinner and a film is fine. But if the two of you like being scared, a scary date night at home can be a lot more memorable, and a mixed-reality horror game gives you something to laugh and gasp about together. Here is how to make HAUNTED: Are You Alone? work for a couple.

The honest setup: one headset, two roles

HAUNTED is played in a headset, and one person wears it at a time. That sounds like a drawback until you try it. The player is in the nightmare; the partner is the audience, the spotter and the comic relief. Then you swap. Both roles are entertaining in different ways.

Do not expect a co-op mode; the game does not advertise one. Treat it like passing the controller back and forth in a classic horror night.

Why it works for a night in

The scares happen in the room you both know. Your sofa, your lamp, your doorway. When the wall behind the player cracks and an enormous arm comes through, the partner on the couch, seeing only the player's reaction, often startles too. Some highlights from the eight chapters:

  • Skulls crawling out of the floor that you shoot or freeze with a flashlight.
  • A graveyard fight with pistols, a shotgun and an AK-47.
  • A cursed doll that you dance with, until it decides the dance is over.
  • A Cursed Nun who has been waiting in the hallway the whole time.

A simple plan for the evening

  1. Prep the room together. Run Space Setup, then clear the floor of cups, cables and anything fragile.
  2. Agree on a stop word. Not a safe word in a heavy sense, just: "headset off" means headset off, no teasing.
  3. Pick who goes first. The braver one usually volunteers, the spotter pays attention to the boundary.
  4. Swap after a chapter or two. Fresh nerves make better reactions.
  5. Wind down. Put the lights on and have something warm or silly ready. Horror is more fun when it ends on a laugh.

Controllers or hands?

The game supports both Touch controllers and hand tracking. Controllers are simple and good for first-timers. Hand tracking feels more exposed, which suits horror: you swing for real with an axe or a sword, and you can also draw symbols on the shop floor. Make sure the room is well lit for hand tracking.

Know each other's limits

Be a good partner about the content. The game has sudden loud sounds, flashing and darkened light, gore and intense jump scares. It is not suitable for people who are pregnant, or for anyone with epilepsy, heart conditions or anxiety disorders. If one of you is unsure, skip it and choose another evening activity. Fear should be a shared choice.

Finding the secrets as a team

The shop between chapters lets you upgrade weapons, and it hides a secret. Try drawing a circle with a dot in the middle on the shop floor. Other strange symbols unlock two secret chapters. Solving that together, with one person drawing and the other pointing, is a nice cooperative moment in an otherwise one-player game.

You can find the game on the Meta Horizon Store.

Make the evening more than the game

Pair the game with a ritual so it feels like a date and not just a console session: cook something together first, agree on a rough plan for how many chapters you will attempt, and leave time afterwards to talk about which moment got you most. Compare reactions, since the person watching sees something quite different from the person inside the headset. If one of you finds it too intense, switch to the spotter role and enjoy the show from the sofa. The best scary date nights end with both people laughing, not one person upset.

FAQ

Can two people play HAUNTED at the same time?

There is one headset in the box and, according to the store description, no two-player mode, so couples swap turns while the other person watches and reacts from the sofa.

Is HAUNTED too scary for a first date?

It contains intense jump scares and gore. If you do not know how your date handles horror, choose something gentler first.

What headset do we need?

A Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3S. Quest 3 and 3S show the room in colour passthrough.

How do we keep it safe at home?

Clear the play area, stay inside your boundary, and take the headset off if anyone feels unwell.
