Long-exposure light trails following a player moving through laser beams

Everyone wants to get faster at Laser Thief, and almost everyone tries the same wrong thing: moving their body quicker. Speed in this game is mostly efficiency. You get faster by wasting fewer moves, not by flailing harder, because every beam you brush shrinks your shield.

Speed is a by-product

A clean run is a fast run. Each time you touch a beam, you lose shield, and sometimes you lose position and rhythm too. The first rule is to get consistent at zero or near-zero shield loss, and only then push tempo.

The support notes recommend slow, deliberate movement near beams. Slow and smooth beats fast and jittery, and over a whole level, smooth often ends up quicker anyway.

Cut wasted moves

Most time disappears in small inefficiencies:

  • Standing and thinking mid-grid.
  • Backtracking to loot you passed.
  • Using a full duck where a lean would do.
  • Re-adjusting your feet repeatedly.

Plan before you move. Our guide to reading laser patterns shows how to settle the route in a few seconds so the movement itself can be continuous.

Chain your moves

Think of a level as a sentence rather than separate words. A duck that ends facing the next gap flows into a step; a step that ends in a good stance flows into a reach. When you plan, choose moves whose end positions suit the next move.

Use the right size of move

The smallest move that works is usually the fastest. A lean takes less time than a step, and a step takes less time than a full turn. Over-dodging is a hidden time cost and a hidden risk. See our dodging tips.

Order the loot well

A route that sweeps across the room beats one that zigzags. In Bomb Mode, where you have 120 seconds to grab as much as you can, ordering is a large part of your score. Our Bomb Mode strategy covers this.

Train tempo gradually

A simple progression in Free Play (random levels, no clock):

  1. Complete five levels at slow tempo with zero shield loss.
  2. Repeat at slightly higher tempo.
  3. If shield starts leaking, drop back one step.
  4. Repeat until the faster tempo feels calm.

You are training your body to be relaxed at higher speeds, which is the real secret of speed.

Keep fitness and focus up

Fatigue slows you down more than hesitation does. Warm up, hydrate and take breaks. Short sessions where you are fresh will teach you more than long ones where you are wobbling. Stop if you feel pain or dizziness.

Check your setup

Poor tracking can make you move more cautiously or lose shield unexpectedly. Good light, uncovered controllers and a fresh Space Setup help you commit to movement with confidence.

Measure so you can improve

It is hard to get faster if you cannot tell whether you are. Pick a repeatable test, such as a fixed number of Free Play levels with a note of how many times your shield shrank, or a Bomb Mode run where you record how much loot you took. Repeat it once a week under similar conditions: same warm-up, same time of day, similar energy.

Compare not just the results but how the run felt. If you scored more and felt calm, you are improving the right way. If you scored more but felt frantic, you may be building habits that will cap you later.

Your best scores and progress are stored locally on your headset, so you have a built-in record. Treat it as a training diary and let it show you where the next gain is hiding.
