What Is Mixed Reality Gaming? Passthrough, Rooms and Play

What is mixed reality gaming? A clear guide to passthrough, room scanning and how games like Sozo Tower Defense blend virtual play with your real room.

Person in a living room with glowing virtual portals opening in the walls

If you have just bought a Meta Quest, you have probably seen the term "mixed reality" on store pages. It sounds technical, but the idea is easy: the game happens in your real room, with virtual things added to it. This guide explains what mixed reality gaming is, how it differs from VR and what it asks of you.

VR, AR and mixed reality in one minute

  • Virtual reality (VR): the headset replaces your surroundings entirely. You are somewhere else.
  • Augmented reality (AR): digital content is overlaid on the real world, often on a phone screen.
  • Mixed reality (MR): digital content is placed in the real world and reacts to it. A virtual object can sit on your real table or appear to come through your real wall.

On modern headsets the line between these is a software choice. The same device can run a fully virtual game or a mixed-reality one.

How a headset shows your room

The key technology is passthrough. Cameras on the headset capture your surroundings and display them inside the lenses, so you see the room even though the headset blocks your direct view. Games can then draw virtual content on top. Quest 3 and 3S offer colour passthrough, which is why mixed reality tends to look best on them.

Many games also use scene data: your headset's Space Setup records the layout of your walls, floor and furniture. A game that asks for permission can use that layout to place objects convincingly, for example putting a portal on a wall or keeping a path on the floor.

What makes a game feel "mixed"

Good mixed reality is more than a floating menu over a camera view. Signs of a real MR design:

  • virtual content is anchored to real surfaces,
  • it respects your furniture and walls,
  • the game's rules use the room (distance, height, direction),
  • you can move around naturally.

An example: tower defense in your living room

Sozo Tower Defense offers a mixed-reality mode alongside its VR mode. After you run Space Setup, portals open in your real walls and monsters march across your real floor toward the Core Crystal. The game gets its room information from the headset and uses it only to play; it does not access or store passthrough camera images, and your room layout stays on the headset.

Because the monsters travel across the floor you walk on, you can approach a bend, kneel and watch a wave pass. It is the same strategy game, but the board is your actual room.

What you need to try it

  • A headset with passthrough. Sozo supports Quest 2, Pro, 3 and 3S; mixed reality looks best with the colour passthrough of Quest 3 and 3S.
  • A completed Space Setup.
  • A reasonably clear, well-lit space.

Safety and comfort

Because you see the room, mixed reality is often more comfortable for people worried about bumping into things. Still, treat it seriously:

  • Remove trip hazards and fragile objects.
  • Keep boundary features enabled.
  • Play in good light.
  • Take breaks and stop if you feel dizzy or unwell.

Who mixed reality suits best

It suits people who like the idea of games that belong to their own space, who want to remain aware of their surroundings or who want to share the experience with others in the room. If you prefer escaping completely, VR mode may feel better, and Sozo offers both.

What to look for in a good mixed reality game

A quick test: does the game still make sense if you move to a different room? If the answer is no, because it clearly depends on your walls and floor, it is using mixed reality properly. Also check whether the game explains the setup, respects your safety boundary and lets you fall back to a fully virtual mode when the room is not suitable. Those details tell you how carefully the designers thought about real homes, which are never as tidy as a demo video.

FAQ

Is mixed reality the same as augmented reality?

They are related. Mixed reality usually implies virtual objects that understand and interact with the real environment, while AR can be a simple overlay.

Do I need special equipment for mixed reality?

You need a headset with passthrough and a completed room setup. Colour passthrough on Quest 3 and 3S looks best.

Does Sozo record my room?

The game uses room layout from your headset only to play, and nothing is sent to the developer. Details are on the Meta store page.
