Arcane Obelisk Guide: When Nothing Else Gets Through
When and how to build the Arcane Obelisk in Sozo Tower Defense: a calm, practical guide to the tower you reach for when other damage types fail.

Most towers in Sozo Tower Defense announce what they do. The Ballista fires bolts, the Cannon blasts groups, the Frost Spire slows. The Arcane Obelisk is described more mysteriously: arcane power for when nothing else gets through. This Arcane Obelisk guide takes that line seriously and turns it into a plan.
What we know, and what we do not
The game tells us two things: the Obelisk deals arcane power, and it is meant for the situations where your other towers are failing. It does not list numbers or special rules, so there is no point pretending to know them. What you can do is use it the way the description suggests, as a backstop.
Think of it as a diagnostic
If you are building the Obelisk, ask first why other things are not working:
- Is it a placement problem? Move or upgrade before adding something new.
- Is it a damage-type problem? Some enemies shrug off certain approaches. Clockwork machines shrug off weak hits, for instance.
- Is it a flyer problem? Then you need the Missile Battery and your own hands, not necessarily the Obelisk.
- Is it a twist problem? Realm rules like regeneration, healing or phasing change how towers behave.
The Obelisk is the right answer when the honest diagnosis is "I need a different kind of damage."
Where it fits in a build
Because it covers what other towers cannot, the Obelisk works as a diversifier. A build of physical, frost, fire and explosive damage plus one arcane source has fewer holes than a build of five towers of similar type. Diversity is the real strategy; the Obelisk is one more voice.
Place it where it sees the part of the path your other towers cover least. Often that is the late stretch near the crystal, as an extra layer before the end.
Protect your investment
Late realms bring harsher twists:
- Necropolis: the Lich King's realm, where the dead rise again, once. Your tower has to finish enemies twice.
- Void Nebula: phasing monsters flicker out of reach right when you aim.
- Neon Overdrive: EMP on death knocks out your towers.
For all of them, avoid stacking your key towers near where enemies die. Give the Obelisk room.
Upgrade it deliberately
Three tiers, as with every tower. Do not upgrade it blindly; upgrade it after you have confirmed that it is doing something your other towers are not. Watch a wave with and without it if you can, and see whether the enemy that was beating you now falls. If the answer is no, the money is better spent elsewhere.
Pair it with time
Any damage tower is better when enemies spend longer in range:
- Frost Spire to slow.
- Stasis to freeze the field for a moment.
- Overcharge to push the entire defense past its limits during a decisive wave.
A last-resort checklist
When a level keeps beating you at the same wave, run this list:
- Watch the wave and name the enemy that gets through.
- Check whether it is a flyer, a brute, a swarm or a boss.
- Check the realm twist.
- Choose the tower that answers that problem; if none does, try the Obelisk.
- Lower the difficulty temporarily to learn the wave, then come back.

A worked example of reaching for the Obelisk
Imagine a level where your Ballistas and Cannons clear the early waves, but the same stubborn enemy keeps slipping past the middle of the path. You have already tried moving a tower and upgrading another, and nothing changed. That is the moment to spend a slot on the Obelisk. Place it where the stubborn enemy spends the most time in range, run the wave once, and compare the result with your last attempt. If the leak closes, you have learned that the problem was damage type, not placement. If it does not, you have still ruled something out, and that is progress.
FAQ
What does the Arcane Obelisk do?
The game describes it as arcane power for when nothing else gets through.
Is the Arcane Obelisk better than other towers?
Not automatically. It adds a different kind of damage, which helps when your current mix has a hole.
When should I build it?
When you have identified a wave that your existing towers cannot handle and no other tower directly answers the problem.
Does it work in every realm?
All eight tower types are part of the game across its realms, so you can try it anywhere; test it where you are stuck.
