Flamethrower Tower Guide: Short Range, Big Burn in Sozo

Flamethrower tower guide for Sozo Tower Defense: how to exploit short range and a lingering burn, where to place it and when fire is the wrong answer.

A stone flamethrower tower spraying fire across a narrow path

The Flamethrower in Sozo Tower Defense comes with a clear trade-off written right in its description: short range, constant fire, and a burn that keeps on hurting. This flamethrower tower guide is about living with that trade-off and getting a lot out of it.

Understand the deal

Short range means the Flamethrower only matters where you put it close to the path. Constant fire means it does not wait or pick moments; while something is in range, it burns. And the burn that keeps on hurting means damage continues after an enemy leaves the flames, which is valuable if enemies are about to walk past other towers.

In other words: it is a tower for the places where the path is narrow, tight and unavoidable.

Best placement: where the path hugs you

  1. Right beside a choke. If the path squeezes past a rock or a wall, that is the flamethrower's home.
  2. At a corner, on the inside. Enemies take the turn within arm's reach.
  3. Just before another tower's range begins. The burn keeps working while the next tower starts its own damage.

Avoid putting it on a long straight far from the path. A flame that cannot reach anything is wasted space.

Why the burn is tactically interesting

A burn that persists means the damage is not tied to the exact moment an enemy is in the flames. For you, that means two things:

  • Enemies that pass quickly still pay for the visit.
  • The Flamethrower pairs naturally with a slowing tower such as the Frost Spire, because a slowed enemy sits longer in range and collects more fire.

Where fire is the wrong answer

Be honest about its limits:

  • Flyers. Short range and a ground-hugging role means flyers sail over it. They skip the path entirely. Use the Missile Battery or punch them yourself.
  • Ember Wastes. This realm is already burning. Fallen enemies leave fire puddles that slow your towers. A fire tower may not be your most natural choice there, and variety of damage types is safer. The game does not say enemies are immune to fire, so test, but do not rely on fire alone.
  • Frostbite Reach. Dying monsters burst into frost and chill nearby towers, which is a good reason to keep your short-range towers from standing in the splash of every death. The Flamethrower is already close to the action, so think about spacing.

Protecting a short-range tower

Because the Flamethrower needs to be near the path, it will also be near the places where enemies die. Realm twists that affect nearby towers (fire puddles in Ember Wastes, frost bursts in Frostbite Reach, EMPs in Neon Overdrive) hit these close-range towers hardest. Two habits help:

  • Spread your close-range towers so a single death cannot disable several at once.
  • Put a long-range tower behind them so something is still shooting if they are knocked out for a moment.

Combining with other damage

A good rotation: Frost Spire slows, Flamethrower burns, Ballista finishes. Add the Cannon where the crowd forms. You can read more about this thinking in our damage combination guide.

Upgrading

Three tiers apply to the Flamethrower as to every tower. Since placement is the key constraint, make sure your Flamethrower sits in a genuinely good spot before upgrading it, and upgrade it before adding a second one nearby. A single strong flame at the right bend is better than two mediocre ones in two ordinary spots.

Powers

Overcharge pushes your towers beyond their limits, and the Flamethrower, with its constant fire, is one of the towers where "more" is easy to picture. If a big wave is about to march through your flame zone, that is a good moment to use it.

FAQ

What is the Flamethrower tower good at in Sozo?

Dealing constant close-range fire with a burn that keeps hurting after the enemy leaves.

Should I use the Flamethrower in Ember Wastes?

You can, but the realm already features fire puddles, so rely on a mix of damage types rather than fire alone.

Does the Flamethrower hit flyers?

Its short-range role is on the ground; use the Missile Battery or your own shooting for flyers.

Where is the best spot for it?

Beside a narrow part of the path or on the inside of a corner, where enemies must pass close.
