Is Mixed Reality Worth It? A Skeptic's Look at Sozo

Think mixed reality is a gimmick? Here is an honest look at what passthrough adds to Sozo Tower Defense on Quest, and when plain VR is the better pick.

Mixed reality has been the headline feature of recent headsets, and plenty of players are unconvinced. You paid for a VR device, why would you want to see your living room? If you are asking is mixed reality worth it, here is a sceptic-friendly answer using Sozo Tower Defense as a test case, including when you should simply skip it.

What mixed reality means, briefly

In mixed reality, the headset's cameras show you your real surroundings (passthrough), and a game adds virtual objects on top. Games can also use a scan of your room, so virtual things interact with real walls and floors.

Sozo does exactly that. In mixed reality mode, portals open in your real walls and the monsters march across your real floor toward the Core Crystal. In VR mode, you play inside immersive fantasy worlds instead. You choose either.

What mixed reality adds

A sense of place. Your room becomes the battlefield. The path crosses your actual floor and, per the privacy policy, goes around your furniture.

Awareness. Seeing your surroundings can make you more aware of obstacles, pets and people, which many players find reassuring.

Social visibility. Spectators in the room can see where the action is happening relative to them.

A different feel. Defending your own living room feels different from defending a fantasy hill. Whether it feels better is subjective.

What it costs you

Be honest about the trade-offs:

  • Setup. You need to run Space Setup on your headset and confirm the room in the game. If you rearrange furniture, redo it.
  • Hardware. The game says mixed reality looks best with the colour passthrough of Quest 3 and 3S. Quest 2 and Pro are supported in VR mode.
  • Room dependence. A cluttered or dark room hurts the experience. The room should be well lit and clear.
  • Less escapism. If you play VR to leave your room behind, passthrough defeats the point.

When VR mode is the better choice

Pick VR mode if:

  • You own a Quest 2 or Quest Pro.
  • Your room is cramped, messy or dim.
  • You want the fantasy realms (Verdant Hollow, Frostbite Reach, Sunken Depths and so on) to surround you.
  • You do not want monsters in your home.

Sozo supports both modes, and VR works on every supported headset, so there is no wrong choice, only preference.

A fair test

If you are on the fence, try a simple comparison:

  1. Play one level in VR mode and note how it feels.
  2. Run Space Setup and play the same or a similar level in mixed reality.
  3. Compare comfort, immersion and effort. Which would you play again?

Use a low difficulty so the comparison is about mode, not challenge. Casual and Normal are available.

Does the game spy on your room?

A reasonable worry. According to the privacy policy, room layout and passthrough are used only on the headset in real time for gameplay; the game does not access, record or store passthrough camera images; and nothing about your room is sent to the developers. You can also delete your room layout in your headset's Space Setup settings.

Does it change the strategy?

Not fundamentally. You still build and upgrade eight tower types across 160 levels, handle flyers and cast Meteor, Stasis and Overcharge. Mixed reality changes presentation, not the rules.

Give it a fair chance

Skepticism is healthy, but one badly lit evening is not a verdict. If you try mixed reality, do it once in good conditions: a tidy room, fresh Space Setup and a low difficulty so you can look around instead of fighting for survival. Then decide. If it still leaves you cold, VR mode gives you the same game without any compromise on content.
