Tower Upgrade Priorities in Sozo Tower Defense

Which tower upgrades to buy first in Sozo Tower Defense: a thinking framework for the three tiers, when to deepen and when to add a new tower.

Three fantasy towers of increasing size and glow standing side by side on a hill

Every tower defense player hits the same fork a hundred times: do I build another tower, or make the one I have better? In Sozo Tower Defense, each of the eight tower types has three tiers, so the question is constant. These tower upgrade priorities are a framework, not a formula: the game does not publish costs or damage numbers, so treat them as principles to test.

The three-tier shape

Three tiers means each tower has a ladder. Climbing the ladder deepens a tower in a fixed place; building a new one widens your defense. Neither is always right.

Deepen when your position is good and your problem is power. Widen when your problem is coverage or variety.

Priority 1: fix the hole, not the average

Look at the wave that beat you. Ask what got through:

  • A heavy enemy: deepen a strong tower in its path. The game's advice for armored brutes is to focus your fire.
  • A crowd: widen with an area tower such as the Cannon, or upgrade the one you have.
  • A flyer: widen with a Missile Battery; upgrading a ground tower won't reach it.
  • A realm twist: change the shape of your layout before spending anywhere.

Upgrading a tower that is not part of the problem is the most common waste.

Priority 2: upgrade the best-placed tower first

A tower with a good view of a long stretch of the path, overlapping with others, is a better upgrade target than a lonely one at a corner nobody passes. An upgraded tower in a bad position is a fancy decoration.

Priority 3: backbone before specialists

The Ballista is described as the reliable backbone of every defense. Early on, upgrading a Ballista or two gives you a floor. Specialists come after: the Frost Spire for slowing, the Cannon for groups, the Prism Laser for tough monsters. See the Ballista guide.

Priority 4: support towers punch above their weight

A Frost Spire that slows the wave buys your other towers time, which multiplies their output. Upgrading it can give more total damage than upgrading a damage tower, in the right setup. Test this: upgrade the spire and watch whether your other towers get noticeably more shots.

Priority 5: protect your upgrades from realm twists

Several realms punish towers near death zones:

  • Ember Wastes: fire puddles slow your towers.
  • Frostbite Reach: dying monsters chill nearby towers.
  • Neon Overdrive: an EMP on death knocks out your towers.

Put your biggest upgrades slightly back from where enemies die, and keep cheaper towers up front.

When to build instead of upgrade

  • When you have no answer to a type of enemy (flyers, armor).
  • When your coverage has a gap on the path.
  • When a twist, like regeneration in Verdant Hollow, means you need overlapping damage in a compact area.
  • When a single tower failing (an EMP, a chill) would leave you open.

A simple order of operations

  1. Place a backbone and a slow.
  2. Watch one wave.
  3. Fix the biggest hole with a new tower of the right type.
  4. Upgrade the best-placed tower in your main kill zone.
  5. Add a specialist for the realm's twist.
  6. Keep a reserve of options for the next surprise.

Don't forget the powers

Meteor, Stasis and Overcharge are not upgrades, but they cover the moments your build cannot. If you are tempted to over-upgrade for the single worst wave, consider whether a power can handle that peak instead. See our guide to the Overcharge power.

Learn by experiment

Because the numbers aren't published, the best approach is to test. On Casual, upgrade one tower and watch what changes. Then do the opposite with the same wave. You'll build intuition quickly, and the Sozo Tower Defense page lists all tower types to experiment with.
