Cool Down After VR Workout Games: A Gentle 5-Minute Routine

How to cool down after an active VR game like Laser Thief: walking, stretching legs and shoulders, rehydrating and what to do about sore muscles.

You just survived a grid of lasers, a timer and a narrator who enjoyed your mistakes a little too much. Now your heart is racing, your legs are warm and you feel oddly buzzy. A short cool down after VR workout games helps your body come back to normal and may reduce stiffness the next day. This is general advice, not medical guidance.

Why cool down at all?

Laser Thief has you ducking, crawling and stretching, which is a proper workout. Stopping abruptly after hard exercise can leave you feeling light-headed or jittery, and cold muscles tighten up. A few minutes of easing off gives your body time to settle.

Step 1: take the headset off and move around (1–2 minutes)

Put the headset and controllers somewhere safe, then walk slowly around the room. Let your breathing slow. If you have been sweating, grab a towel. Check the floor as you go, since controllers and cables sometimes migrate.

Step 2: drink some water

Have a drink. A bottle just outside the play area is easy to set up before you start.

Step 3: gentle stretches (2–3 minutes)

Hold each for 20–30 seconds, without bouncing, and only to mild tension.

  • Quadriceps: stand on one leg and hold the other foot behind you, or lean against a wall.
  • Hamstrings: sit with one leg out and fold gently forward.
  • Hips: a low lunge with the back knee down, ideally on a mat.
  • Calves: press your heel into the floor behind you against a wall.
  • Shoulders and chest: pull one arm across your chest, then clasp your hands behind your back.
  • Wrists: gently extend and flex them, since you may have crawled.

Step 4: let your eyes rest

After a long session, look at something distant for a minute. Dim the screen or lights, and avoid jumping straight into a phone.

Step 5: care for the kit

Wipe the facial interface and let it dry, as described in our headset hygiene guide.

If you feel off

Dizziness, nausea or unusual discomfort after playing is a sign to stop for the day and take it easy. The game's own advice: stop immediately and take a break if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, and do not continue if it persists. More in our dizziness guide.

What about sore muscles?

A bit of soreness the next day, in thighs and shoulders especially, is common after a new activity. Rest, light walking and gentle stretching usually help. Sharp or lingering pain is a different matter, and you should get it checked. Our knee comfort article discusses joint care.

Winding down for sleep

If you play in the evening, give yourself time before bed. Finish at least an hour before sleep if you can, and use the cool-down to switch gears. Shorter sessions help too; see how long to play per session.

A routine you can remember

Headset off, walk, water, stretch, wipe the kit. That is the whole thing, and it takes less time than a single Bomb Mode round plus a replay.

When you are rested, you can return to the Laser Thief vault for another run.

Cooling down after a Bomb Mode burst versus a long Story session

Not every session needs the same wind-down. A single 120-second Bomb Mode round is short but intense, so it is mostly about letting your breathing slow, a drink and a quick leg and shoulder stretch. A longer Story Mode evening, with many ducks and crawls, deserves the full five minutes plus a closer look at wrists and knees.

If you notice you are always stiff in the same spot, treat that as information. It may mean your warm-up skipped that area, or that your stance is putting extra load on one side. Adjusting either is better than stretching harder afterwards.

FAQ

Do I need to cool down after VR?
