Laser Thief Free Play Mode: The Stress-Free Way to Learn
How to use Laser Thief Free Play mode as a warm-up and practice space: random levels, no timer, and a plan to learn the moves before Story or Bomb Mode.

Not every session needs a ticking clock. Laser Thief Free Play mode is built for exactly that: random levels, no timer, no pressure. According to the game page, it's perfect for warming up, showing the game to friends or simply enjoying the laser show. If you are new, it might be the best place to start.
What Free Play is
Free Play is one of the game's three modes, alongside Story Mode and the 120-second Bomb Mode. Its features, straight from the game page:
- Random levels.
- No clock and no pressure.
- A relaxed place to warm up, show the game to friends or enjoy the lasers.
We won't invent more than that. For example, we aren't claiming particular unlocks or scoring rules for it.
Why it is good for beginners
You can learn the four moves
The core moves are duck, dodge, crawl and reach. In Free Play you can practise each without a timer breathing down your neck. Try ducking under chest-height beams, leaning through gaps, crawling when grids go low and grabbing loot without touching the light.
You can find your room's limits
Every room is different. Free Play lets you discover how far you can step before reaching the boundary, where the furniture sits and which side feels cramped. Our small room tips go deeper.
You can test your setup
If beams look offset or shield loss feels odd, Free Play is a low-stakes way to check lighting and room mapping before committing to a Story run. See lasers not lining up.
A beginner plan for your first Free Play session
- Warm up first. Five minutes of squats, hip circles and arm swings. See the warm-up routine.
- Start slow. Slow, deliberate movement near beams is safer than fast.
- Focus on one move at a time. Do a few levels concentrating on ducking, then dodging, then crawling.
- Watch for poison bubbles. They punish standing still, so keep gently moving.
- Stop at 15–20 minutes. See session length.
Using Free Play with friends
The game page highlights showing the game to friends. Keep spectators outside the play area, then swap. Hand over a headset only after wiping the facial interface. Our articles on spectator tips and headset hygiene help.
When to move on
When you can clear levels without tensing up, try Story Mode for the progression through the seven worlds, or Bomb Mode when you want a 120-second challenge. See preparing for Bomb Mode.
Safety still applies
Even without a timer, Free Play asks you to move. Clear your area, wear suitable footwear and stop if anything hurts, as the terms advise.
Try it for yourself on the Laser Thief page.
Small exercises to try in Free Play
Because the levels are random and there is no clock, Free Play works as a gym for single skills. Pick one skill per session and treat it like a drill.
- Duck drill: each time a chest-height beam appears, go down with a bent-knee squat instead of bending at the waist, then stand up smoothly.
- Gap drill: before you move, point at the opening you are going to use, then take exactly one lean or step through it.
- Crawl drill: when the grid drops, stay low for the entire section and stand only when it is clear.
- Reach drill: move your hand to the loot slowly and pull back along the same path.
Ten or fifteen minutes of this builds confidence, and the habits carry straight into Story Mode.
Reading what Free Play tells you about your setup
Because the levels are low-stakes, Free Play is also a good moment to listen to your room. Notice whether you often back into the same corner, whether one side of the square feels tight, or whether beams sometimes seem to sit a little off from your furniture. Those are clues, not failures. They tell you whether to nudge a chair, re-run Space Setup or add a bit more light before moving on to a harder mode.
