Standing VR Games for Players Used to Sitting Down

Ready to move on from seated play? These standing VR games tips help you graduate to room-scale, with Laser Thief as a first full-body step.

Person rising from an armchair in a headset as red laser beams stretch across the living room floor

Plenty of people begin their headset life seated: a racing game from the sofa, a puzzle from the armchair, a film in a virtual cinema. It is comfortable and it works. But eventually curiosity pulls you toward standing VR games, the ones that use your whole body and your actual room. If that is you, here is how to make the jump, and why Laser Thief is a friendly place to land.

What changes when you stand

When you move from seated to room-scale play, three things shift. Your body becomes the input, so mistakes cost you balance rather than just points. Your room becomes part of the game, so furniture and walls matter. And your stamina matters, since you are no longer resting between button presses.

None of this is scary, but it deserves preparation.

Why Laser Thief makes a good first full-body game

The goal is easy to understand: do not touch the light, grab the loot. The game uses passthrough on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, so you see your own room rather than being whisked off to a fully virtual world. That reduces the leap of faith, because you can see where your sofa is.

Its four core moves are simple, too: duck, dodge, crawl and reach. Early levels are gentler, and each level gets a little harder, so you grow into it rather than being thrown in. Free Play, with random levels and no timer, is ideal for the first session.

Your preparation checklist

  1. Clear the floor. About 3 × 3 metres (10 × 10 feet) is recommended. Remove cables, rugs that slide and anything fragile.
  2. Run Space Setup. Capture floor, walls and large furniture so the game maps beams properly. Re-run it if you rearrange.
  3. Light the room. Good lighting helps the headset track you.
  4. Wear the right footwear. Non-slip shoes or bare feet on a safe surface.
  5. Warm up. Shoulder rolls, hip circles and a few easy squats.
  6. Keep water nearby and a cloth for the headset.
  7. Tell housemates. A surprised person wandering in is a hazard.

Building up gradually

Treat the first weeks as a ramp rather than a leap.

  • Week one: short Free Play sessions, ten minutes at most. Notice what feels tiring.
  • Week two: begin Story Mode, a level or two per session. Take breaks.
  • Later: try Bomb Mode, a 120-second push to grab as much loot as possible, once you are comfortable with the moves.

If your legs or shoulders ache the next day, that is a signal to slow down. The game's support page says it is more physically demanding than most games and recommends short sessions.

Common worries of seated players

  • "I will bump into something." Room setup and a clear floor handle most of this. Virtual lasers do not protect you from real furniture, so be deliberate.
  • "I will get dizzy." Stop immediately if you do. Because you move physically, many players find it more natural than joystick movement, but responses vary.
  • "I am out of shape." Start gently. The game does not require sprinting or jumping, and Free Play removes the clock.
  • "I will look silly." Yes, and so will everyone. That is part of the fun.

If you have a medical condition affecting movement, balance or your heart, consult a doctor before switching to physical play.

Is it worth leaving the armchair?

Standing games can feel like a different hobby: more energetic, more social and more memorable. Laser Thief is a gentle on-ramp with humour from its narrator and silly worlds from a snack-guarding kitchen to a vault. Not everyone needs to graduate, and seated games remain great. But if you are curious, this is a low-barrier try.
