Tank Tactics in VR for Strategy Lovers: Tank Avenger
Strategy lovers can find tank tactics in VR with bouncing shots, weapon builds and wave modes. See what Tank Avenger offers and what it does not.

Strategy fans often write off action games as button mashing. Tank Avenger: Mixed Reality isn't a turn-based strategy game, and I won't pretend it is. But if you like tank tactics in VR, there's real thinking underneath the shooting: bounce angles, weapon choices, cover and the order in which you spend your upgrades. Here is how a tactics-minded player can approach it.
Think in geometry
The simplest piece of tactics is how your shots behave. In this game:
- The Normal Gun's bullets bounce once off walls.
- The Fast Gun has rapid fire with bullets that bounce twice.
- The Heat Gun's bullets track the player.
- The Big Gun fires massive explosive bullets.
- The Triple Gun fires three bullets at once.
- The Bomb Thrower covers the battlefield with explosives.
Those aren't cosmetic differences. A bouncing bullet turns a wall into a weapon: you can hit an enemy sheltering behind a block by playing the angle. The Desert world, with open sand and long sightlines, rewards planning where shells will end up. The Ice world adds slick floors and shots that keep on going, which changes every angle you thought you knew.
Read the world
Each of the four worlds changes the terrain logic:
| World | Tactical character |
|---|---|
| City | Ruined metropolis, the classic battlefield |
| Desert | Open sand, long sightlines, nowhere to hide from bouncing shells |
| Jungle | Dense cover, tight corridors, ambushes around every block |
| Ice | Slick floors, sliding tanks, shots that keep on going |
In the Jungle you play close and cautious; in the Desert you play range and angles. Switching approach per world is the core of the strategy.
Build your loadout
Coins come from every battle and each weapon is upgraded on its own, so how you spend them shapes your playstyle. A few ways to think about it:
- Specialist. Pour coins into one weapon until it dominates.
- Generalist. Spread upgrades across several for flexibility.
- Counter-picker. Keep a tracking Heat Gun for opponents who dodge, a Big Gun for fortified positions.
Abilities add a second layer: Shield, Speed Boost, Extra Life, Combat Drone, Portal and Air Strike. Deciding when to burn the Shield and when to save the Air Strike is genuine resource management. The published description doesn't say how abilities are earned or how often they can be used, so I can't promise rules there; learn them in play.
Pick the mode that suits your style
- Deathmatch: destroy every enemy on the field. Pure positioning.
- Capture the Flag: capture and defend the enemy flag. Offence versus defence.
- Juggernaut: become the ultimate powerhouse.
- Survival: wave after wave, where resource planning matters most.
Design your own puzzles
For the strategy designer, the Level Builder is the best part. You create custom levels around your real play space, placing blocks on the coffee table, walls along the sofa and spawn points by the door. Building a level that forces a particular bounce shot, then solving it, is a tactics puzzle of your own making.
Use your body as a camera
Mixed reality gives you a tool a flat screen can't: you can move your head. Lean over the table for a top-down read, crouch for a low view along a corridor. That physical perspective is a tactical advantage in itself.
What it isn't
This is a real-time action game. You'll need quick reactions as well as planning, and moments like catching a launched NUKE or cutting a fiber optic drone's wire call for fast hands. If you want slow deliberation, look elsewhere; if you like tactics under pressure, this fits. Play in short sessions, clear a floor area of roughly 2 × 2 metres and stop if you feel unwell. The Tank Avenger page has the overview, and the Meta Horizon Store listing the current price.
FAQ
Is Tank Avenger a strategy game?
It is a real-time action game with tactical elements such as bouncing bullets, weapon upgrades and different worlds, not a turn-based strategy game.
Which weapon is best for bank shots?
The Fast Gun's bullets bounce twice and the Normal Gun's once, so those two are the natural choice for ricochet play.
Can I plan my own maps?
Yes. The Level Builder lets you create custom levels around your real play space.
Do upgrades matter?
Coins earned in battle upgrade each weapon individually, so spending decisions shape how you play.
