Wave-Based VR Games for Survival Mode Fans: Tank Avenger

Lone tank with a glowing shield surrounded by approaching enemy tanks

There's a particular joy in the "one more wave" loop: you tell yourself you'll stop after this round, then the next one starts. For fans of wave-based VR games, the appeal is clear scoring (how far did you get?) and mounting tension. Tank Avenger: Mixed Reality includes a Survival mode where you fight through wave after wave of enemies. Here is how to approach it, using only what the game verifiably offers.

What Survival mode is

The game's description is short and exact: Survival, "fight through wave after wave of enemies". It's one of four modes alongside Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Juggernaut. I don't have details on wave counts, enemy mixes or scoring, so I'll avoid pretending. What I can offer is a way to think about surviving.

Pick your world with care

The four worlds change the tactical feel and presumably the way a wave pushes at you:

  • City: ruined metropolis, familiar cover.
  • Desert: open sand and long sightlines, nowhere to hide from bouncing shells.
  • Jungle: dense cover, tight corridors, ambushes around every block.
  • Ice: slick floors, sliding tanks, shots that keep on going.

For survival, cover and chokepoints are a friend; open ground is a risk. If you want to test how well you handle pressure, try the Jungle's corridors first.

Build a survival loadout

Between runs you earn coins in every battle to upgrade your weapons one by one. Think defensively as well as offensively:

  1. Area control. The Bomb Thrower covers the battlefield with explosives, and the Triple Gun fires three bullets at once.
  2. Sustained damage. The Fast Gun gives rapid fire with double bounces.
  3. Tracking help. The Heat Gun's bullets track the player, useful when you're busy moving.
  4. Heavy hits. The Big Gun's massive explosive bullets.

Abilities matter even more in a long run: Shield, Speed Boost, Extra Life, Combat Drone, Portal and Air Strike. Save the Extra Life and Shield for when you need them rather than burning them early. The published information doesn't explain how they're triggered or refreshed, so learn that in play.

Habits that extend a run

  • Move. Standing still in a mixed reality arena invites trouble; you can walk around the table or floor to change your angle.
  • Use walls. Bouncing bullets (once for the Normal Gun, twice for the Fast Gun) turn walls into weapons.
  • Watch for specials. Fiber optic drones creep toward you on thin wires; cut them before they reach your tank. If a NUKE is launched, catch it with your hands and throw it far away.
  • Know when to leave the ground. The helicopter lets you reach places no tank can.
  • Don't tunnel vision. Look around the arena regularly.

Pace yourself, physically

Survival runs can be long, and mixed reality is physical. Warm up briefly, keep water nearby and stop when you tire. The developer recommends short sessions and breaks, and says to stop immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous or uncomfortable. A run is never worth pushing through discomfort.

Make your own survival arena

The Level Builder lets you create custom levels around your real play space. Try a deliberately cramped design: blocks forming corridors on the coffee table, walls along the sofa, spawn points by the door. Then fight in the arena you designed. A bad layout teaches you what makes a good one.

Room and safety

Clear roughly 2 × 2 metres of floor, finish the headset's room setup, light the room and keep pets and people outside the play area. In the heat of a wave, you won't be watching your feet.

Who it suits

If you like escalating tension and chasing a personal best, Survival is a good reason to own the game. If you prefer story or slow puzzles, the other modes may suit you better. The Tank Avenger page has the full overview, and the Meta Horizon Store listing has the current price.
